Where will your mission take you?

“I can’t recommend Operation Fitness enough. I’ve been training with Gav and John for almost a year now and have achieved brilliant results. I have lost over 5 stone and an unbelievable 42 inches! More than that though, I’m now fitter, healthier and happier than I ever have been and I’ve developed a passion for fitness! Training with Operation Fitness is hard work but it’s also great fun and most importantly, it gets results. As well as the fitness side there’s also a brilliant social aspect of training with hilarious banter in the parks, regular events and challenges and of course the odd customary night out!  I’ve met some amazing friends through fitness and am determined to keep challenging myself and carry on achieving my goals!”

”After deciding that it was time to get fit again, I was recommended by a colleague to give Operation Fitness a go. I have been training with John and Gav for just over six months now, initially struggling to finish a set of exercises, never mind a session! I have moved up from blue bib to red bib and will shortly be moving to the coveted black bib. Thanks to the work of the guys and support of my fellow op-fitters I have managed to knock 3 minutes from my mile run and have lost 4 and a half stone in total. Now that my fitness levels have improved, I hope to enter some fitness events to challenge myself further.”

”I’ve been training with John and Gav for 2 years now and I love the tough, yet fun approach they have – and training outdoors with a team of like-minded members beats the gym for me any day. Opfit sessions are different every time, using all sorts of equipment like tyres, battle ropes and harnesses, to help enhance the workout and keep the sessions interesting, you never know what’s coming next!

My goal was to train harder and push myself at black bib level, to help me fit into my dream wedding dress – since being a black bib, I have noticed huge improvements in my speed, strength and stamina, as well as dropping two dress sizes and nearly two stone.”

”I had a succession of injuries over the last 2 years or so, coupled with a life style that bordered on little more than self abuse for the last 4 years. The shape, health, well being and fitness that I had carried throughout my teens, twenties and in to my early thirties was almost at a point of being totally out of reach. At 4.30 on July 4th I heard about Op-Fit. By 6.45 I was face down in the grass on Nunsmoor Park. By 7.30 I was signed up, and back on track. I’ve lost weight, found everyone to be friendly and looking to achieve the same results as me. I feel fitter and better now than I have for 4 or 5 years, and importantly I managed to comfortably wear a pair of expensive Armani combat pants that have laid dormant in the back of my wardrobe for nearly 3 years yesterday!”

I joined Operation Fitness last summer, about 3 months after giving birth to my third child.  I have always been a keen runner, but have never been as fit (or as thin) as I am now.  Operation Fitness sessions are extremely hard work, that’s why I love them.  The training is so varied that I never become bored, something that happened quite quickly at exercise classes I have attended in the past.  The early morning sessions are perfect, I like to get my workout done before the school run and work; that way there’s no talking myself out of it.  On an average week I attend 2 or 3 Operation Fitness sessions, have one PT session with John and go out running 2 or 3 times.  This training schedule has seen me achieve a new personal best for half marathon distance (1:41) and I also recently completed my first marathon in 3:43!

Training with Operation Fitness has transformed me!  I have been training with John and Gav for two years now. Over the past 20 years, I have been a member of countless gyms and used them for an initial period after joining and then stopped.  I have never consistently exercised for any period of time.  When I started training with John and Gav, I hadn’t done any exercise for over six years having finally abandoned my feeble attempts at going to a gym when I got married in 2005.  Six years, two children and a huge appetite for unhealthy food later, I was very overweight and unhappy with my body.   I started training to help my weight loss and now, four stones lighter and four dress sizes smaller, I love exercise and look forward to my regular Op Fit classes and personal training with John.  The classes are brilliant as every session is different and you never know what you’re going to get.  I love exercising outdoors.  If you’d told me two years ago I would be in a park exercising in snow at 6.30 a.m. in December  I would have never have believed it but I am generally there at 6.30 a.m. whatever the weather, rain snow, wind and/or sun, four times a week. The encouragement and motivation from John and Gav is fantastic and together with the team spirit with the other members it makes even the toughest of classes really good fun.  I’ve made a great group of friends and am healthier, slimmer and fitter than I have ever been!

”The sessions are great, John and Gav mix them up so that no two are the same. There’s all kinds of activities like sprints, shuttle runs, leg & arm work, ab work, team work along with lots of equipment which work on different muscle groups; boxing, kettle bells, sand bags, logs etc. The best part of training for me is the social aspect whilst getting fit, it’s great going to an evening session and having a good work out whilst having a laugh too. In fitness I’m more motivated when I’m working in a team and that’s why Op Fit is perfect. John and Gav push you to make sure you work hard and in turn you reap the benefits.   Also, whilst at Op Fit, I met my ‘fiance’ Richard, he mixes Op Fit with the gym as he likes to keep his fitness up whilst building muscle too. He found that the gym alone was not conjusive for CV / fitness; and OpFit exercise is best for toning, not building big muscles.

My ultimate goal wasn’t to lose weight per se, but to get fit along with feeling fit and healthy. Since starting Op Fit in September 2010, I’ve achieved my goal as I am the fittest I’ve ever been and as a bonus I’ve lost over one stone too! Not only have I achieved my goal but I’m also gaining my ‘future husband to be!’ from Op Fit and we’re getting married September 2013!”

I joined Operation Fitness in July 2012.  I had my third child in March 2011 and was finding it very difficult to lose the 5 stone of babyweight!  I had tried all sorts of diet plans but realised that I needed to get back into fitness but I needed something that would work around my children.  Operation Fitness worked really well for me as I was able to go to the sessions they run in the mornings and get my exercise done for the day and back home to get my kids ready for school!

The sessions are great – really good fun and always different with lots of different equipment.  The instructors are brill – they really know what they are doing and push you as hard as you want to be pushed.  The social side is great too as the other members are really friendly and we have regular social events.

So in the last 6 months I have seen huge changes.  Not only have I lost nearly 2 stone in weight and dropped 2 dress sizes, I have seen a huge change in my mood and outset.  I have more energy (which is surprising as I am up at 5.45am every morning for training!) and generally feel much more positive and balanced.

I really want people to understand that if you had said to me 6 months ago that I would be training outside every morning at 6.30am I would have laughed in your face!  I have never enjoyed exercise or thought I was any good at it until I joined Operation Fitness.  I am a different person now and not just in the way I look but the way I think too!

Thank you Operation Fitness

‘Hi, My name is Joe I am a 65 year old retired builder. In the past I have kept fit by running 16 GNR and 1 London marathon.
Training with Operation Fitness is more about all round fitness not just running. It is much more fun than running on your own and every session is different.
You exercise mostly outdoors in parks and on the quayside. Age makes no difference what so ever as my younger sister and my young nephew train at the same session as myself.
Last year we went as a team to the lake district to compete in a cross country obstacle course which was great fun. I would recommend OpFit to anyone, regardless of age or ability.’

”I kept fit in my younger days but things slip as you get older, and despite occasional efforts to address the situation, all the signs were that I would end up a fat middle aged bloke sitting behind a desk waiting for the inevitable heart attack. I started training with John and Gav a few years ago no…w, about a year ago now I stepped things up and started going twice a week. The instructors push you to new limits, while somehow (most of the time) making it enjoyable. I now wear a black bib and make a decent effort at keeping up.
I can honestly say I am fitter and healthier than at any time in my life, and I reckon that’s not something most blokes of my age can say. Never overweight, I have lost about half a stone and toned up. I had a prolapse disc about ten years ago now, and before I started regular exercise it was more or less a constant irritant. I hardly ever notice it now.
I am sure I will continue with Operation Fitness for as long as my photo is on the front page of the website, and I will also continue to ignore the constant offers of dietary and nutrition advice from the instructors and eat whatever I want. Sorry Gav.
Minus points, well I am down to a 30 waist and I hate shopping for jeans. The last time I went to a black tie dinner I tried my dinner jacket on to find it was too big. Its supposed to go the other way.
If you are looking to get fit then whatever your age or fitness level, Operation Fitness will help you put the effort in.
You might think you wouldn’t enjoy running round a park at 830 on a Saturday morning in December with 4 inches of snow on the ground, but trust me, you will”

I have been training with John and Gav at Operation Fitness for nearly one years now. I have always had a good level of fitness but after deciding to join Operation Fitness I have been encouraged by both the instructors to reach levels I couldn’t imagine. I decided to join Operation Fitness as, after being a member of many gyms, I just didn’t seem to be getting anything out of it. Being stuck insi…de and spending a few minutes on one machine then the next just was a bit boring for me. Every session now is always different and varied and includes bodyweight exercises and use of different equipment and toys! There is always a good atmosphere during sessions and also on the social side with many nights out and events.  While training with Op.Fit. I have completed many races and challenges including the Great North Run in 1:29, Total Warrior 10k assault course, Rat Race mighty deerstalker night race (in the pitch dark, minus degrees, snow on the ground and wading up the river Tweed. Who says these things are not fun!)  Also the national Three Peaks 24 hour challenge in 19:59. I couldn’t recommend Operation Fitness enough to young, old or at any level of fitness! As one of the younger members I am able to train at my own level while encouraging and being encouraged by other members of the group.

”I work full time and I am married with a young child, so I have always struggled to make the time for exercise as in the past I found it so boring. I had 5 different personal trainers and have been a member of several gyms over the years. My friend, a rower, knows I love fresh air and suggested I go to Operation Fitness with him. I thought it would be full of ‘GI Joes’ who do 50 press ups for fun and lots of people who take fitness super seriously and make me want to shout “bore off”.
My assumptions were way off as there is a friendly comfortable atmosphere and a wide range of abilities. There is a great bib system which allows you to focus on getting the most out the session meaning you don’t have to worry about everyone waiting or watching you. The truth is, people are not counting your reps as they are too busy pushing themselves or encouraging their partner.
I have been a member for over 18 months now (about a year longer than I lasted with any gym membership) as I never get bored. Exercising in beautiful Heaton Park or running round the lake at Saltwell park feels so much better than a sterile gym and I have definitely had man flu a lot less! There is a great variery of classes and if you go straight from work you will find it is a good stress relief after a long day. The instructors make it a lot more fun and always keep you motivated but it is not OTT.
You see other members losing weight, toning up and getting noticeably fitter, which spurs you on as it proves that it really works- so even if it is a session that I enjoy less (legs and abs!) I know it is all to help me achieve my goals and I just look forward to the next session being padwork (hitting the pads is great) or kettlebells or circuit training which I enjoy more.
I have gotten stronger, fitter and now I have much better posture and no bad back thanks to all the core work. I have laughed a lot, sweated a lot , and although I still do not love running I am far quicker; this has given me the confidence to try new things like Total Warrior, Go Ape, and Segway. I have always loved mountain biking and football, and Op Fit has made both more enjoyable now that I am in the best shape of my life.
I do find it much easier to make it to 2 or 3 of the sessions every week than I ever did to get to a health club 100m away and open around the clock. As my Mum says “I think you need to start exercising in the park soon as you are too grumpy”. My wife says the best present I ever bought her was 10 Personal Training sessions with one of the instructors, and when I get tips at work I treat myself to PT as I feel like a rock star afterwards. Modern life is stressful and exercise is essential if you want to avoid the inevitable road rage, middle age spreads etc etc; you may as well make it as enjoyable as possible! My advice is to do what makes you your best self, and this works for me. If anyone does 5 classes and does not enjoy it then come to the Three Mile on a Tuesday and I will buy you a drink after the quiz. I would bet after 3 sessions you will be hooked. Great instructors , great people, great parks, great results, great laugh, great value. Great times !”

I started exercising once my third child was 6 months old and I could no longer come up with any more excuses. I hadn’t done any exercise for years and even the thought of a short run was fairly daunting. I set myself a 10k as a target to work towards, hoping I could do it in under an hour. Now, with John and Gav’s help, I’ve just done my first marathon in 3hr 28, a 10k in 42 minutes and get withdrawal symptoms if I don’t get to Op Fit.

I work part time as a Doctor and have 3 young children. Life is busy, but I’ve found that training with Op Fit has given me more energy. I’m fitter and more toned than I’ve ever been and feel so much better. The flexible timetable at Op Fit means I can combine the classes with a fairly hectic home life. When I can’t make a class, I can go for a run. The variety of training at Op Fit gives you brilliant all round fitness. It has also helped my running – the core and leg strength work has improved my running and more importantly the classes are fun. Gav and John manage to motivate and encourage you, while at the same time making sure you have a laugh. They quickly realise what you’re capable of and how to encourage you out of your comfort zone. There’s a good gang of people and the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, distracting you from the pain! I also get to eat cake without feeling guilty!

I’ve gone from someone who didn’t exercise, to someone who cannot imagine stopping. I genuinely love it and if I can do it, anyone can.

”I’ve been training with John and Gav for 3 years now. I first joined in summer, enjoyed it, and then was a bit worried about training outside in winter in the dark and cold as the days got shorter. But I carried on easily and haven’t looked back. After 5 minutes’ exercise you are always toasty warm! I enjoy training outside in the parks after a day in the office. I like the variety of activities we do – strength, endurance, speed, stretching… It’s a great all round, balanced work out. I work much harder in a group session than I would ever do on my own, which shows in results/fitness levels. It’s fun and worthwhile in itself, but it’s also helped me prepare for the GNR and various Challenge walks. And there’s a lot of banter, which is a good laugh. Training with Op Fit feels like having a personal trainer, but at a fraction of the price. I also like their use of social media, and the socials in town! I definitely miss it if I can’t make a session or am away. Really enjoying the sessions makes keeping fit much easier…”

”Fit as F##k and Fifty

Let’s face it I was fat and I wasn’t the “retired athlete” I professed to be.

Historically I played a lot of sport and thought I could eat what I liked. As a result I soon learnt, put simply you can’t. My sporting activities tailed off for a variety of factors – injuries and family commitments. The 9 operations (feet, knees, hip and back) took their toll and quite frankly I was going to seed.

Whilst out to pasture if someone had told me I would soon be getting up at 5:30am at least twice a week to run about on the Quayside in the occasional Icelandic conditions and more importantly enjoying it – I wouldn’t have believed them.

The transition from clapped out banger to reliable and sturdy family saloon started with the free lunchtime sessions on the quayside (many thanks to NE 1 for their fantastic sponsorship in that regard). I am not going to lie it was tough at the start.

I worked through the injuries that had plagued the end of my time playing competitive sport (squash) due to the more structured and conditioning approach provided by the Op Fit Sessions. I was provided with professional advice from the instructors and soon strength followed in areas previously weak and prone to injury.

I could have done it better – although training like a demon I was still over indulging telling myself I had earned the treats and Friday night in the pub. I could have been more restrained and sensible but I continued to fool myself into thinking the two balanced out.

I have however learnt through my involvement with OPFit and Old age that’s it’s not rocket science
I now eat less ‘crap’ and have better portion control – I also eat more healthily. My thought process in respect of food has changed and although I still allow myself some pleasures the majority of the time I eat raw unprocessed food and reduce my intake of foods with limited nutritional properties. And I feel better for it. I don’t deny myself the occasional treat (Cadbury Crème Egg’s my guilty pleasure) but the physical and health benefits the regular exercise and dietary change provide far outweigh the sugar high.

As a personal preference alcohol is now a thing of the past (which I know won’t be for all) but having not partaken in the ‘Devil’s Water’ for many months, I can honestly say I have never felt better.

Taking up with Op fit full time (as well as the free sessions) was one of the best decisions I have made in a long time.

The quality and variety of the sessions are excellent – I am qualified coach in a couple of sports and I can appreciate the detail and professionalism of the instructors. The personalities involved also make it fun and the experience of exercising in a group provides no end of entertainment.

I started my mission with OPFit at a time when I was under exceptional stress (my house burnt down amongst other things!! Not a good scenario believe me) – if I hadn’t trained as hard as I did I wouldn’t have got through all of the problems that were mounting up for me. It provided me an escapism and the lifted my sprits when I was at my lowest.

I have recently turned 50 – it’s all good and I feel great – granted the left knee is shot to pieces but actually exercise helps the arthritis – I kid you not …

Top tips –really listen to what John has to say: – “he doesn’t say this s##t for laughs” – also “it’s all in the form”

As Gav might say: “Happy”?

And the Answer should always be: “Yes”

The best recommendation I can make to improve your quality of life, physical fitness and health is to – Join up with Op Fit”
